Michelin launches two new sustainable material tyres

Recently, Michelin launched two types of tires with 45% and 58% sustainable materials, which will be suitable for passenger cars and buses. These two new tires have been approved for road use, laying the foundation for the introduction of tires with high content of sustainable materials in the next two to three years.

The breakthrough benefited from the use of more natural rubber, recycled carbon black, sunflower seed oil and bio resin, silica extracted from rice husks, and recycled steel. It is reported that Michelin plans to increase the proportion of sustainable materials in tires to 40% by 2030, and make tires 100% from biological sources, renewable or recyclable materials by 2050.

By the end of 2021, Michelin holds 3678 valid patents in the field of high-tech materials. At the same time, it has a series of targeted cooperation projects, including Pyrowave (recycled styrene), Carbios (recycled PET plastics), Enviro (recycled carbon black), IFPEN/Axens (biological butadiene) with the participation of ADEME (French Ecological Transformation Agency), Empeinte project with ADEME, black cycle project and white cycle project to help establish a circular economy, Convert waste tires into high-quality raw materials that can be used to manufacture new tires.
