The difference between rubber and silicone

Rubber is divided into natural rubber and synthetic rubber. The structure of natural rubber is a high polymer of isoprene, and synthetic rubber such as butadiene rubber, neoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, etc. As a kind of rubber, silica gel has the characteristics of high and low temperature resistance, weather resistance, ozone resistance, non-toxicity and environmental protection. Silicone and rubber can not be said which is better, it can only be said that it is good to apply it in the right way. The following is a detailed introduction to the difference between silicone and rubber.

The difference between rubber and silicone

Rubber is divided into natural rubber and synthetic rubber. The structure of natural rubber is a high polymer of isoprene, and synthetic rubber such as butadiene rubber, neoprene, styrene-butadiene rubber, etc. When the cross-linked rubber is deformed by external force, it has the ability to recover quickly, and has good physical and mechanical properties and chemical stability.

Silicone rubber is mainly composed of high molar mass linear polysiloxane. Since the Si-O-Si bond is the basic bond type, the silicon atom is mainly connected to the methyl group, and a very small amount of unsaturated groups is introduced into the side chain. It is arranged outside and can rotate freely, so after vulcanization, silicone rubber has excellent high and low temperature resistance (-100~315℃), weather resistance, water repellency, electrical insulation, physiological inertia and other characteristics. It has been widely used in production and people's daily life. The most important thing is that it is not toxic, and it is commonly used in pacifiers and breast augmentation fillers.

1. The two definitions are different. Rubber is a general term that includes many types, such as natural rubber, cis-butadiene rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, propylene rubber, and of course silicone rubber; and silicone is one of the specific varieties of rubber.

2. Rubber has a wide range of uses, mainly using the elastic effect of rubber, such as rubber tires, bridge shock absorption, hose rubber rollers, etc., mainly in industrial applications; silicone is mostly used in food and household appliances, such as Pacifiers, spoons for children, pressure cooker seals, etc.

3. Different types and grades of rubber have different applications. For example, natural rubber is mainly used for tires, butyl rubber is mainly used for inner tubes, and EPDM rubber is used for sealing products.

4. When choosing rubber, it needs to be based on specific performance requirements, such as hardness, tensile strength, compression deformation, wear, tear, use environment, etc. From their properties, we can see that silicone rubber has the incomparable advantages of ordinary rubber. The price of silicone rubber is more expensive. Which one is better depends on our use. If ordinary rubber products can meet our needs, There is no need to kill chickens with a knife, use better performance and higher price silicone.
